Work Stoppage: Could Prove Costly

With the hype building around the US National Team after a great run in the Confederations Cup and winning the CONCACAF qualifying group, expectations are high. Most feel the US has to at least qualify from their group, if not advance beyond the 2nd round.

But the ongoing labor dispute in the MLS could get in the way of that run.

US National Team Preview: Defense

Our coverage of the United States National team continues here on Lets Get Mental. Who will make the final roster? Who still has a chance to get on the team if they finish well? Who is close to losing their plane ticket?

We have already looked at the goalkeeping situation which is, outside of the #3 spot, crystal clear. But as obvious as that part of the roster is, the rest is much less so.

How many defenders, midfielders, and forwards should a coach take? Every World Cup at least one coach comes under scrutiny for not taking enough of something or wasting a spot on a guy who plays the same position as someone else. Last World Cup it was Sven Goran Erikkson for not only taking just 4 strikers, but taking 17-year-old Theo Walcott who was considered too inexperienced and never played. This essentially left England with 3 options up front.

But enough about that. After much thought I have decided that the final 20 roster spots will be filled by 8 defenders, 8 midfielders, and 4 forwards. Today’s selection: Defense.
